Artist's statement:
Ever since encountering the beautiful intricacies of Balinese
batik fabrics years ago, Bali cast its spell and has had a steady pull
on my subconscious. Little facts would wander by and stick like glue,
“In Bali there is no word for artist, because everyone is one.” “In
Bali babies are carried and don’t touch the ground until they are six
months old.” Bali kept calling me, and eventually I had to see for
myself this magical land where the ordinary was sacred and an attitude
of reverence was the norm. What I found was a land where people
always smile and meet your eye; a land where the abundance and
lushness of nature weaves itself into religious practices, music and
dance, and basketry, wood and stone carving, batik, and weaving.
Altars and temples grow abundantly, seemingly into the landscape.
People perform ceremonies and everything, even cars are adorned in
worship. The light on the landscape, the beauty and warmth in
Balinese faces, the intricacies of batik and woven textiles, basketry
and traditional performances all beckoned to be captured in
photographs. I went to photograph. I went to heal. These photographs
represent my journey.
This show is called “Touching the Earth” in honor of the
baby-touching-the-ground ceremony we were fortunate to witness,
depicted in one of my photographs here, but also to highlight how all
of Bali, be it the ducks in the rice paddies or the people in their
homes and at work, all are connected intimately to their natural
environment.
My photographic pilgrimage was an experiment in relying solely on
digital technology. The photographs were captured by the Canon 5D
Mark II camera: an excellent camera for the many low light and hand
held needs of the moment, and printed in my studio in Canyon with the
Epson 7800 ink jet printer and Lightroom software. Matting and
framing is available.
