Artist's statement:
During my travels to third world countries, I take photos on my
trips which I later use for inspiration in painting. Using the camera, I look
for a strong composition which captures an interesting pattern of light and dark
or a pleasing combination of bright colors. When choosing a photo as a subject
for a painting, I often simplify the shapes and eliminate distracting details
while pushing the colors to intensify the impact of the scene.
I am drawn to rich color combinations - bright tropical hues like
those I might find in a lively market or quaint village or even in the
ornamental design of a tribal costume. I am attracted by abstract organic patterns
found in nature. These elements of design and pattern are often integrated into my
paintings. I search out vibrant scenes when traveling and try to translate the
mystery and sparkle of the scene into a painting. In addition to the subject
matter, I am inspired by color, as well as the formal concerns of design andvalue
contrasts. In the past I have focused on vistas and landscape. More recently I
am interested in including people of the local culture into the scenes,
engaged in their everyday activities.
