Artist's statement:

My fascination with and enthusiasm for the natural environment and wildlife has been channeled into creating portraits of other species, with an emphasis on depicting the individuality inherent within each creature. My paintings are a mirror, in a sense, of the earthy, biological and spiritual origins humans share with all life forms. In my work I question the assumption that we are profoundly separate from and superior to other creatures; a belief inconsistent with earth-based, indigenous traditions that have long held my interest.

My paintings are made with acrylic, charcoal, pastel and occasionally dried clay on unprimed, unstretched canvas. I paint on raw, unstretched canvas out of an aversion to the 'perfect,' and for me, unnatural look and feel of stretched, primed canvas. I like the feel of something solid and real (like a wall) behind my canvas, a surface that will stand up to me when I push hard with my brush; and unprimed canvas will naturally soak up water, like the earth. My work comes from a primal or “raw” place inside of me, and my materials and process in this way are congruent with my inspiration. I use live models, sketches and photographs as starting points for all works.

Mysticism and Shamanism have played strong roles in the shaping of my work, from the early study of Kabbalah to more recent involvement in Native American ceremony and shamanic practice. Clairvoyant studies through the Berkeley Psychic Institute and Aesclepion Institute, and many years of practicing Vipassana meditation have enriched my artwork immensely by helping me to deepen and direct my sensitivity. Through education in midwifery and womens' mysteries at the Midwifery Institute of California and working as a doula and midwife’s assistant, my work at times becomes more deeply evocative of the Sacred Feminine.
