Eastern Greetings: Photographs of Tibet

In September 2000, I traveled to Asia. I found China bustling and full of contrasts. I found Tibet relaxed, gentle, and poor. Despite warnings in tour books, the Tibetans I met were not worried that my photographs would trap life-force energy and hamper their reincarnation; they were eager to be my subjects.

My passion is for documenting things. As a demographer by profession, I look to capture what is - beautiful or ordinary, troubling or amusing. As I do that, something magical happens. A "spiritual hello" happens when one person sees and validates the essence of another. Photography aids that process, whether the object in the photo is a monk, yak, or mountain. I feel exhilarated taking photos because the camera is always in present time, forcing me to be there too. And I get to practice "non-attachment to outcome" as most photos do not turn out as expected. I find it ironic that photography - focused on the physical - has so many spiritual doorways.
