Artist's Statement:
My new series of abstract paintings came out of a desire to work with color, shape, texture and line without a representational image in mind. Letting go of reality allows me to explore composition in a new way, as a visual playground where one's eye can explore intriguing shifts in color, depth and perspective.
My process involves placing shapes and colors on the canvas intuitively, editing as I go, leaving drips and traces of underlayers and finally, finding a balance in the piece. I find that my compositions often suggest natural and urban landscapes. The "objects" in the paintings run along a continuum between geometric and organic shapes. There is also variation in how the "objects" and the background relate; some more clearly delineated and in others merging as if partially hidden in mist.
I have been inspired and influenced by the work of Joan Mitchell, Mark Rothko, and Sean Scully, among others. The "floating" or stacked rectangle borrowed from these artists can represent many things, material and otherwise; a book, a rock, a space for contemplation; allowing multiple and varied associations for the viewer.
