Artist Statement
This series, river stories, helped bring me to a still and pregnant silence; a sacred space that allowed for spiritual guidance and new beginnings. Life changes can be turbulent and like my painting, I was standing in white water...confused and in chaos. I went to the river and sat and observed the movement, fluidity and the many moods of the water. I began to experiment with making my own marks more fluid. Mixing medium into my oil paints to make them more liquid, I then began to pour paint and medium onto my canvas letting the colors flow and blend. Decisions to stop the flow, to add a warm current, or a layer of flotsam, were made in the moment so that the creative flow meandered or gushed at whim.

The water has been a rhythmic part of my extended home. My childhood was spent close to the ocean in the Fiji Islands, my youth was spent commercial fishing in Bristol Bay, Alaska; the Alaskan summers of my adulthood were spent living next to a remote, fish filled stream.

Reflecting is the experience of standing in the river all day (fishing, I have found, is the most acceptable way to do this). Standing and simultaneously sensing the depth of the water and its illuminated surface, the wind through the trees and their colorful presence. It is so easy at these moments to remember that my spirit is connected to everything around me. The two rocks under a stream of water in touching, hint at the sense that we are connected to all things in this flow of time that we call life. My intent for sharing this work is to remind others of the purity of our connection.
