Artist Statement

A Connecticut native, Elizabeth resides in California. She received a B.S. in Mass Communication, magna cum laude, from Boston University and a Certificate in Business Administration, with distinction, from the University of California, Berkeley's extension program. She is a published author in three anthologies (Alyson Books’ Heatwave, Skin Deep, and Electric).

Elizabeth has participated in group art shows in San Francisco (Fort Mason Art Center, Herbst Pavilion, Southern Exposure, and the Theresa Mullens Gallery), Berkeley (Expressions Gallery and the Berkeley Art Center), Oakland (Joyce Gordon Gallery, where the exhibit received a "Don't Miss" mention by San Francisco Chronicle feature writer Mary Eisenhart) and Novato, where her work was included in the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art’s national exhibition "Realities and Illusions" juried by San Francisco Chronicle art critic Kenneth Baker. Her first solo show occurred at Vero salon/gallery in Oakland’s Rockridge district. Her second solo exhibit, "Perception and Reality," took place at Stanford University's Clayman Institute, curated by Institute fellow Heather Green. This show at Bucci's is her third solo exhibit. Elizabeth's prints are held by private collectors in Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, among other cities.

About her photography she states, "My work aspires to push past the boundaries of conditioned perception, moving beyond our tendency to define and categorize according to what we think we are seeing and know to be true (which perhaps we do in anticipation of getting ground under our feet) and our unease with ambiguity (which perhaps leads us to this desire to "pin things down"). By re-contextualizing and re-appropriating images from our material world, I am inviting viewers to experience my work -- and the world around them -- from a place of empty mind. This proposition might involve re-considering habitual frames of reference and going beyond the perceptual status quo. The contents of my work, which are derived from chance aesthetic encounters, are never staged; I shoot as I see."

Each of Elizabeth's photographs has a limited edition. Matting and framing are available. To preview more of her work, log onto www.flickr.com/elizabethwilliams. She can be reached at EMWinCA@yahoo.com.
